These days, Scott Porter keeps a very full schedule.

He teaches at MyComputerCareer, an online technical college that prepares students for careers in the IT service industry. He also picks up extra work through the Field Nation platform when he has free time.

“Working through Field Nation helps me stay up-to-date on the latest technology,” he says. “It gives me field experience with new tech, which I can bring back to the classroom and help my students get the full picture in terms of the skills they’ll need to be successful. I can familiarize myself with field service trends like security settings, SD-WAN, and the increase in wireless access points––and then I can pass that on to my students.”

“It’s a real win-win situation,” he adds.

Scott is a veteran of the industry. In his 30+ years of IT experience, he has completed jobs for numerous high-profile clients including the National Security Agency and NASA. His background has given him a well-rounded ability to tackle any technology problem head-on.

“Solving problems is the most challenging part of the job, but it’s also the most fun. You don’t always know exactly what you’re walking into. You have to prepare, but you also have to be ready to encounter something new.”

This is the type of insight Scott passes along to his students at MyComputerCareer. He also recommends that his students look into Field Nation as a resource for connecting with work opportunities.

“I’ve recommended many, many students over the past nine years––probably hundreds of them. It’s always been a positive experience for my students, which is great to hear, and it’s been a positive experience for their clients as well.”

When it comes to signing up for individual jobs through the Field Nation platform, Scott thinks strategically about when and where to apply his skillset.

“One of the things I love about Field Nation is the flexibility when it comes to time and location,” he notes. “In fact, sometimes when I have some spare time on a working vacation, I’ll pick up a job through Field Nation.”

This combination of discernment and hard work is a hallmark of Scott’s impressive career.

“There were times in the past 10 years when I’ve been in between employment, and Field Nation gives me the opportunity to work on my own terms until the right full-time position comes along.”

He sums it up: “Field Nation has honestly been a lifesaver.”
