Overview
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly one in four working Americans holds an occupational certification or license. As the security industry evolves, professionals who install and maintain cabling, access control, and CCTV/surveillance systems must navigate a complex landscape of licensing requirements.
Each state has its own rules for obtaining, verifying, and maintaining these licenses. A recent study by the Institute for Justice found that only 12% of licensed occupations are licensed universally across the U.S. One state may have significant licensing requirements, and neighboring states may have few to no requirements.
This guide compiles state-specific resources for license verification, licensure requirements, and application forms for cabling, access control, and CCTV/surveillance. Whether you’re new or an experienced technician, use this guide to learn more about the requirements of the state or states you plan to do work in.
Disclaimer: This guide does not include resources for state or local permits or licenses that may be required to generally operate a business. Your state or locality may have additional requirements to operate your business or perform security work that are not included here. While we strive to provide accurate and up-to-date information, licensing requirements can change frequently. Field Nation is not responsible for the accuracy of external resources and makes no representations regarding the licensing status of technicians using the Field Nation platform. This guide is for informational purposes only and should not be considered legal advice. Consult a licensed attorney for legal guidance about specific licensing requirements.
