Working in field services sometimes comes with its own set of hazards. According to data from our insurance partner, HUB International, one common risk is ladder-related injuries – especially when work is being done in a ceiling or on a roof.

Though it may seem simple, taking time to prioritize these ladder safety tips today could help prevent injuries tomorrow:

  • Position the ladder on a stable, level surface, and secure it at the top and bottom to prevent movement.
  • Never stand on the top rung of a ladder.
  • Go slowly and always maintain three points of contact with the ladder.
  • Avoid carrying tools or materials while on a ladder.
  • Remove dirt, gravel, or other material that could impact stability and increase the chances of slipping.
  • Ladders should be stored in a secure, upright position, in a dry/indoor area to help prevent additional wear.
  • Regularly inspect ladders for defects. Damaged ladders should be replaced or professionally repaired.
  • Keep your body centered, and if you can’t reach something, avoid overreaching. Take the time to stop and move the ladder – not just your body.
